Plumbing across Cardiff, street by street.
Cardiff is not one plumbing job, it is several. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Roath, Cathays, Canton and Grangetown come with original soil stacks, shared lateral drains running out under back gardens, and bathrooms squeezed into rear back additions. The interwar suburbs to the north, Heath, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Llanishen, Birchgrove, are a different proposition again, with more generous layouts and pipework of a different era. Out towards Lisvane and Radyr, larger detached properties and modern estates change the questions once more.
Two things hold true across all of it. The first is that Cardiff's water is soft to slightly hard, because the supply comes off Brecon Beacons sandstone and shale rather than chalk. Limescale is a minor issue here, and advice written for hard water England does not describe conditions in this city. What actually shortens boiler life locally is sludge, magnetite from corroding steel radiators in systems that have lost their inhibitor.
The second is drainage ownership. Since October 2011 most shared drains and pipe runs beyond your boundary have been Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's rather than yours, and on a terraced street that covers a great deal of the pipework people assume they are liable for. Highway gullies are Cardiff Council's. It is worth knowing which of the three you are dealing with before anyone starts charging you.

Which parts of Cardiff do you cover?

Is the drain in my garden mine or Welsh Water's?
It depends where it runs. Pipes serving only your property and lying inside your boundary are yours; pipes beyond your boundary or shared with neighbours are usually Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's following the 2011 transfer. On a Cardiff terrace it is very often shared. I will tell you before you spend anything.
Do I need a water softener in Cardiff?
Rarely worth it for scale reasons. Cardiff's supply comes off Brecon Beacons sandstone and shale rather than chalk, so the water is soft to slightly hard. Sludge in the heating system does far more damage here than limescale.
Who do I report a blocked drain in the road to?
Highway gullies are Cardiff Council. The public sewer is Welsh Water. Neither should be costing you a private call-out, and I will point you at the right one rather than charge you.
