Local knowledge

Plumbing in Barry, from the docks to the estates.

Barry splits cleanly into two kinds of property and two kinds of job. The dock-era terraces near the town centre and Barry Island have original clayware, shared rear drain runs and the constraints any Victorian terrace brings. The large postwar and modern estates further out were built to later standards, frequently on separate foul and surface water systems, which behave differently when something goes wrong, a misconnected waste can produce a persistent drain smell with nothing actually blocked.

Being on the coast adds a factor that inland properties do not have. Salt-laden air corrodes boiler flue terminals, external condensate pipework and brackets faster here than elsewhere, particularly near the seafront. It does not shorten the life of the boiler itself, but it does mean external components deserve a proper inspection at a service rather than a glance. Wind-blown sand also settles in gullies and shallow drain runs on properties near the front.

Barry is in the Vale of Glamorgan, not Cardiff, worth knowing when reporting a highway gully, since the two get mixed up regularly. Water across the Vale runs a little harder than north Cardiff but remains only slightly hard by UK standards, so scale is not the specification driver some national advice suggests. I also cover Sully, Dinas Powys, Rhoose and the surrounding Vale villages.

Paul, who runs Cardiff & Caerphilly Plumbers.

Meet Paul

Hi, I'm Paul.

I started Cardiff & Caerphilly Plumbers because I kept hearing the same three stories: the plumber who never rang back, the quote that doubled halfway through, and the mess left behind in someone's hallway.

So I keep it simple. You ring, you get me, not a call centre. I turn up when I said I would, I explain what's wrong in plain English and what it'll cost before I start, and I clear up after myself.

I've been improving and maintaining homes for over 15 years, and I'm based at Royal Buildings on Stanwell Road in Penarth.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Which areas around Barry do you cover?

Barry, Barry Island, Sully, Dinas Powys, Rhoose and the surrounding Vale of Glamorgan villages. I aim to attend emergency calls within 90 minutes.

Is Barry covered by Cardiff Council?

No, Barry is in the Vale of Glamorgan, so highway gullies and road drainage go to Vale of Glamorgan Council. It catches people out regularly.

Does being near the sea affect my plumbing?

It affects external components rather than anything indoors. Salt-laden air corrodes boiler flue terminals, external condensate pipework and brackets faster than inland, and wind-blown sand settles in gullies near the front.

There is a drain smell but nothing is blocked, why?

On the newer estates, which are often on separate foul and surface water systems, a misconnected waste can send foul water into the surface water drain. It smells without anything being blocked, and dye testing will find it.

What does an emergency call-out cost in Barry?

There is no call-out fee. It is £80 for the first half hour, or £150 out of hours and at weekends, and you will know that before I set off.

Who fixes a shared drain behind a terrace in Barry?

Since 1 October 2011, a drain shared with neighbours is usually Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's responsibility, not the homeowner's. The short run serving only your house, inside your boundary, stays yours. I will check which it is before you pay for anything.
