Working on Pontypridd's valley-side terraces.

Pontypridd's terraces are stepped up the valley sides, and that geometry drives most of what I do here. Drain runs are long, often external and steeply fallen, and steep is not automatically good, because water can outrun the solids it is carrying and leave deposits part-way down the run. When I survey a drain in Pontypridd I am usually looking for a specific settled section rather than an obstruction near the house.

Elevation governs the heating side. Mains flow falls as you climb, and properties high on the hillside frequently have less than a combi needs to serve two outlets at once. A bigger combi cannot deliver water it is not being fed, so where flow is genuinely limited the right answer is usually a system boiler with a stored cylinder. Measuring the incoming flow settles that question in minutes and prevents an expensive disappointment.

Exposure accounts for the winter calls. Frozen condensate pipes lock boilers out reliably on these hillsides, and expansion vessel failures show up as pressure that will not hold, which people commonly mistake for a hidden leak somewhere in the house.
