Local knowledge

What I get called to in Caerphilly.

Caerphilly's terraced streets follow the contours, and that shapes most of the work. Where a row shares one lateral drain running downhill, a blockage part-way along backs up into the lowest property first, so the household that floods is frequently not the household that caused it. Since the 2011 transfer, that shared pipework is usually Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's responsibility rather than any individual homeowner's, which is worth establishing before anyone pays for a clearance.

Height is the other constant. Mains pressure and flow fall off with elevation, and properties on the higher ground around the town often have less available than a combi boiler was specified to use. The symptom people describe is a shower that dies when a tap opens, which is a supply problem, not a boiler fault, and fitting a bigger boiler will not touch it. I measure incoming flow before recommending anything.

Exposure does the rest. Frozen condensate pipes are the routine winter call up here: the boiler locks out with an alarming fault code and the cause is an unlagged plastic pipe on a north-facing wall. It is cheap to fix and largely preventable at an autumn service. I cover Caerphilly town along with Bedwas, Trethomas, Llanbradach, Abertridwr and Senghenydd.

Plan of three terraced houses showing which drainage pipes the homeowner is responsible for and which are Welsh Water's Each house has a short drain serving only itself, which is the homeowner's responsibility. Those join a shared drain running behind all three houses. Because that shared drain serves more than one property it is usually Welsh Water's, even where it runs inside a garden. Everything beyond the rear boundary is also Welsh Water's, and it connects to the public sewer. Terraced houses rear boundary public sewer your drain serves only you shared with your neighbours past your boundary Usually yours Usually Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's
Since 1 October 2011 most shared drains and lateral drains transferred to Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. The short run serving only your house, inside your boundary, stays yours, but the moment a pipe serves more than one property, or crosses your boundary, it is usually theirs. On a terrace that is very often the exact pipe that has blocked. Highway gullies in the street are the council's. If you are unsure, it is worth checking before you pay anyone.

Paul, who runs Cardiff & Caerphilly Plumbers.

Meet Paul

Hi, I'm Paul.

I started Cardiff & Caerphilly Plumbers because I kept hearing the same three stories: the plumber who never rang back, the quote that doubled halfway through, and the mess left behind in someone's hallway.

So I keep it simple. You ring, you get me, not a call centre. I turn up when I said I would, I explain what's wrong in plain English and what it'll cost before I start, and I clear up after myself.

I've been improving and maintaining homes for over 15 years, and I'm based at Royal Buildings on Stanwell Road in Penarth.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Do you cover the villages around Caerphilly?

Yes, Bedwas, Trethomas, Llanbradach, Abertridwr and Senghenydd as well as Caerphilly town. I aim to reach emergency calls inside 90 minutes.

Why is my water pressure poor higher up the hill?

Mains pressure and flow fall with elevation, so properties on the higher ground genuinely have less available. It is a supply characteristic rather than a fault, and it is worth measuring before anyone sells you a bigger boiler to fix it.

Which council handles road drainage here?

Caerphilly County Borough Council for highway gullies. The public sewer network is Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's.

My neighbours and I share a drain, who is responsible?

Since October 2011 drains serving more than one property are generally Welsh Water's rather than any individual householder's. On the terraced streets here that covers a lot of the pipework people assume is theirs.
