Roath is dense late-Victorian and Edwardian terracing, and the plumbing problems are consistent enough to predict. Properties share lateral drains that run out under back gardens and rear lanes to a common connection. Original cast-iron soil stacks are still in service on a lot of these houses, and bathrooms are almost always in the rear back addition, served by a single stack that dictates what any new layout can do.

The shared drainage is the thing most worth knowing about. Since October 2011, pipework serving more than one property, and runs beyond your own boundary, generally became Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's responsibility rather than the homeowner's.
